Since the adoption of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) Regulation in 2011, a growing number of participation mechanisms have been developed to support EU legislative processes (Greenwood, 2019; Costello, 2024). Since 2011, when the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) Regulation was passed, various citizen participation mechanisms have been in place to improve EU legislation. This report examines European participation mechanisms, their role, value and how theycontribute to policy formulation, the construction of shared European constituency and the fostering of a sense of belonging, trust, and identification with European values and ways of life.
